Unit 6 Holidays

1.     Teaching content
 The former part of Part A in Unit 6
2.     Teaching aims
a.      Introduce “What do people usually do at…?”  “They …”
            “Did you… last …?”   “Yes, I did.”  “No, I didn’t.”
b.     Introduce New Year’s Day and Spring Festival by using the above sentences.
3.     The important point of teaching
Let the student understand the present indefinite and the simple past tense and use them properly.
4.     The difficult point of teaching
The pronunciations of the new words of “relative” and “delicious”.
5.     The preparation for the teaching
The computer, TV, tape recorder, word cards
6.     Teaching process
A.   . Free talk
T: Boys and girls, today we’re going to talk about an very interesting topic “holidays”. Do you like holidays? Today is 12th of October, eleven days ago there was a long holiday. Can you tell me what’s the name?
S: National Day.
T: When’s National Day?
S: The 1st of October.
T: What holiday comes after National Day? ( show the sentence on the blackboard)  What (holiday is on the 31st of October?
S: Halloween.
(show the picture of Halloween on the TV)
T: What holiday comes after Halloween?
   What holiday comes after New Year’s Day?
The students follow the teacher to ask and answer the left six holidays according to their dates. On the screen you will see nine pictures of holidays.

Children’s Day    Dragon Boat Festival   Mid-Autumn Festival
B.   Revision
  The student ask and answer in pairs about the dates of the nine holidays.
        “ When’s Halloween?  “ It’s ….”
C.   Presentation of the preposition “on’
 T: These holidays have different dates and they are matched with different prepositions. Look at the phrases carefully and find the rule behind them. Then tell me when we use the preposition “on” before the holiday. (on the screen you can see “on” and “Day” flashing )

  at Spring Festival   at Easter       on May Day
  on Children Day    at Dragon Boat Festival   at Spring Festival 
S: We use “on” before “Day”.
D.   Presentation and practice of New Year’s Day
T: Today we only talk about New Year’s Day and Spring Festival, and what do people usually do on New Year’s Day and at Spring Festival.
(Show “What do people usually do on…?” “They usually…” on the blackboard.)
  T: “People” means man, woman, boy, girl. (Show “people” on the blackboard.)
T: New Year’s Day is on the 1st of January. Every country celebrates New Year’s Day, China, Japan, America and so on. Let’s watch the video and know what people usually do on New Year’s Day.
(1)  Students only watch the video at the first time.
(2)  Students listen to the teacher’s explanation while watching again.
(3) Students answer the teacher’s question “What do people usually do on New Year’s Day?”
(4) Students ask and answer in pair the question according to the video

E.    New words
T: Did you play with your friend last New Year’s Day?
S: Yes, I did. /No, I didn’t.
(Show “Did you…?”    “Yes, I did. /No, I didn’t.”
      “didn’t =did not” on the blackboard.)
T: Did you go to the party? Did you have a big lunch last year? I had a big lunch with my family last year. And I can show what I had, want to see?
(Students watch the video of delicious fish , vegetable and chicken, guess the Chinese meaning of “delicious” and learn it.)
T: Besides having lots of delicious food, I also visited my relatives last year.(Show “relative” on the blackboard.)
(Watch the video.)T: In a family there is father, mother, brother, sister, grandparent. Relatives also include “aunt”. What does it mean in Chinese?
S: 阿姨, 姑姑, 舅母.
(Teacher explains “uncle” and “cousin” the same way)
T: “Uncle” means “ 叔叔, 舅舅, 姨父, 姑父” “cousin” means “表哥, 表弟…” These people are your relatives. Relatives are the members in a big family. ( Students guess the Chinese meaning and learn it.)
F.   Presentation and practice of Spring Festival
T: Do you sometimes visit you relatives and friends? For most Chinese people, they visit their relatives and friends and had lots of delicious food at Spring Festival. Because Spring Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, the most important festival in China. The next video will show you what people usually do at Spring Festival.
(5) Students only watch the video at the first time.
(6)  Students listen to the teacher’s explanation while watching again.
(7) Students answer the teacher’s question “What do people usually do at Spring Festival?”
(8) Students ask and answer in pair the question according to the video.

G.  New words
T: Did you visit the relatives and friends last Spring Festival?
   Did you have lots of delicious food?
 S: Yes, I did.
T: He or she visited the relatives and had lots of delicious food.
  (Show the pictures) Now we know people usually go to parties on New Year’s Day. They usually visit the relatives and friends and have lots of delicious food. What about my 2004? Did I do these things? Ask me with “Did you…? I will tell you.
S: Did you visit your relatives and friends?
  Did you have lots of delicious food?
  Did you go to the party?
T: Yes, I did. I visited my relatives and friends. I had lots of delicious food. I went to the party.
  “went” and “had” are the past tense of “go” and “ have”
(Show “went” and “had” on the blackboard)
H. Presentation and practice of the dialogue
T: We have talked a lot about holidays in our class. Let’s go to Mr Green’s class and see what they are doing? (Show the picture.)
 What date is it today? Look at their faces and eyes, are they excited? Yes, Christmas is coming. They are getting very excited. And Mr Green is talking to his students about holidays. Listen.

  (1) What holiday comes after Christmas?
  (2) Did David go to the party last year?
  (3) Did Su Hai visit her relatives and friends and have lots of delicious food last Spring Festival?
 3. Read after the tape recorder.
 4. Students read the dialogue together.
I.Consolidation
T: We have learnt what people usually do on New Year’s Day and at Spring Festival. Next New Year’s Day and next Spring Festival are coming after November and December. Can you make a presentation about the holidays to your friends. Take out your paper, fill in the blank. These phrases will help you do it. Four students a group, each group only choose one holiday.
